HAZOP - Hazards and Operations Analysis

HAZOP = systematic identification of hazardous / emergency conditions of complex process equipment / systems (detection of possible causes and consequences), including verification of existing safety functions and formulation of risk reduction measures.

The HAZOP method is applicable to all types of processes and can be used on almost any (process) equipment / system (continuous, sequential or batch). The method can also be applied to different phases of the project or in the life cycle of any equipment / technology:

  • start-up / shutdown (including emergency shutdown),
  • reconstruction (revamp),
  • Front End Engineering Design (FEED),
  • detailed engineering,
  • conceptual study.

HAZOP STUDIES

The HAZOP study can be qualitative or semi-quantitative (Risk Matrix implementation). The HAZOP study is done in four basic steps:

HAZOP STUDY BENEFIT

  • Identification of hazardous / emergency situations at different stages of the project or life cycle of the equipment / technology,
  • Identification of possible operator failures,
  • Increasing the safety of equipment / technology (for new and existing equipment / technology),
  • Increasing equipment / technology operability,

NORMATIVE BASIS

  • EN 61882: Hazard and operations studies (HAZOP studies) - User Instructions.
  • Guidelines for Engineering Design for Process Safety – American Institute for Chemical Engineers, 1993.

WE DO

  • Complete preparation of the HAZOP study:
    • division into individual nodes,
    • graphical representation of the nodes in P&IDs, PFDs diagrams,
    • elaboration of the study schedule.
  • professional management of the HAZOP study:
    • study management,
    • study registration / record.
  • Elaboration of final documentation:
    • study registration,
    • list of recommendations,
    • graphical representation in P&IDs, PFDs diagrams after the end of the study.
